About

Artisan
at heart.

"Mon objectif était égoïste — apprendre, me surprendre moi-même."

I am not a naval architect. I am a French master cabinetmaker and master carpenter — by diploma and by passion. I love to design, study feasibility, and then build the thing myself, from start to finish.

Having led my own furniture manufacturing company, I turned to naval architecture to push the limits of wood craft further — curvature, descriptive geometry, CNC and laser cutting. That cross-pollination between traditions is the core of everything I do.

Feeling grateful for the generosity of the open-source community, it is now my turn to give back — free boat plans, open tools, shared knowledge. Just a craftsman passing it on.

Hello, in first hand, I am not a naval architect, I am french master cabinetmaker and master carpenter by diploma and experience ...

I have a real passion for building how wide it can be, I love design, conception study and then complete the project by building myself...

Having been in business like director of my own furniture's company, I was like perverted by the obligation of rentability compulsory to each company .... At end, i have great memories of this experience, but a refusal to fall asleep on acquired ...

It is in this spirit that I started learning in naval architecture. What I discovered : exciting techniques and incredible discover of lack of communication between the various crafts, in fact learning shipbuilding opened exciting horizons, original technology, different materials that I used, yet the mastery of these techniques would help me many times in my precedent business where it is sometimes very difficult to manage with dimensional changes due to hygrometry... Even if we will never be able to prevent the material work, shipbuilding offers heavy experience in high solicitations and outstanding efforts... The mastery of curvable buildings, imperative in shipbuilding, pushes us to the extreme limits of descriptive geometry ...

With this in mind, after having ingested somehow the basics of naval architecture and built my first boat, I thought that if there was a lack of communication between ship carpentry and buildings carpentry, it should be the same in the other direction... So I studied conception of following products like a carpenter/cabinetmaker, took out of drawers the traditional assemblies and played with modern tools, CAD softwares and numerical laser machine...

My goal was selfish, learn, surprise myself, the tests were as high as my expectations, excessively acurate works with perfect symmetry and especially a crazy speed of realization...

So I want to thank all the amazing guys who worked on softwares as amazing as themselves, on various add-ons, plug-ins and ultra sharp outlets that allowed me to conduct my projects with big facility...

Feeling happy because their generosity, it is my turn to give, hoping to participate in the democratization of construction, just coming back ... :)

↓ planche.pdf — Building plan ↓ Dropbox — Laser cutting panels (5 × 6mm plywood) ↓ SketchUp 3D Warehouse

Building process design, step by step — you can print this panel on big size and build your boat step by step.

Click on the left image to download the 3D SketchUp file of the optimist. Play with all units and understand how they work together. All axes designed are 6mm bolts — they allow to press during glue works without waiting for the glue to dry, you will win a lot of time and will never have to wait for next step.

Download on Dropbox the 5 panels of 6mm plywood already organised with all optimist's units ready for laser cutting. Keep in Adobe Illustrator format or export to your own format depending on your machine's software.

Please download the PDF file — it covers all phases step by step. Respect the order and every time glue the units together using 6mm threaded rods, wing nuts and washers. Quantities: 42 × 80mm, 27 × 60mm, 2 × 120mm, 74 × 40mm. The glue is bi-component epoxy (100g resin / 80g hardener — check your brand's specifications).

With threaded rods, you can press, clean and move to the next step without waiting for the glue to dry. Until step 17 count in order on the PDF building plan and glue every time. Step 18: fix all together without glue, just press and progress. Glue again at steps 22, 25 and 26. Check the whole boat — if all sections look great, glue all connections with epoxy resin and micro-ball charge, making filets everywhere. Wait 24h, cut all crossing plywood used to press, then work on outside fiberglass stratification.

Delphi 001 Delphi 002 Delphi 003 Delphi 004 Delphi 005 Delphi 006 Delphi 007 Delphi 008

Delphi 15 is a kit concepted to have perfect symmetry and fast building limiting at its maximum the building's mistakes and square errors. The Delphi is 4m50 long with cathedral hull to have efficient stability. The Delphi is really original because the outboard motor is inside the hull and not in back of the transom — it's covered by an insulated cover offering less noise and nice comfort in navigation. The rotation of the hull is obtained by rear rudder like inboard motors.

Its light weight offers nice speed increase with a simple 40 hp. The beam of the hull 1m60 and the cathedral hull form insures big stability. This small boat offers comfortable navigation up to 4 people. The banana form of the hull accelerates the way to the planning navigation — this planning access is increased by the form of the top rudder which contributes to press the boat down to planning with 6 degrees down angle. After planning the angle of this rudder changes to 8 degrees top angle like a plane rudder to stabilize and fix the planning angle of the hull.

The cathedral hull allows a performant hydrodynamic in water. This really light boat allows lake and coastal navigation, can go further in sea with experimented captain. The average in fuel with max crew at 20 knots should turn (suzuki dt40wr ref) around 8.8 liters/hour.

Delphi 15 is ideal for leisure and towing nautic ski and wakeboard with its integrated traction fixation in the back rudder. This system is really fast building and low mistake — can be done by people building their first boat.
